The television show, The Twelve, is a Flemish language courtroom crime drama thriller that was created by Sanne Nuyens and Bert Van Dael. It is a Belgian TV series that is also streamed by Netflix and it has proved highly popular with viewers and critics.
What is the show, The Twelve, all about?
The Twelve, which is “De Twaalf” in the Dutch language, is a fictional courtroom drama thriller with a difference, it follows the lives of the twelve members of a jury, demonstrating how their individual life experiences and biases can affect how they reach their decisions regarding the verdict. The twelve members of this particular jury have a daunting task ahead of them as they have to make a decision on whether a school headmistress is guilty of committing two murders that took place several years apart. The defendant in the murder cases is Fri Palmers, played by Maaike Cafmeyer, and she stands accused of killing her best friend, Brechtje Vindevogel, played by Lynn Van Royen, on New Year’s Day, 2000. She is also accused of the murder of her own daughter, 2 year old Roos, played by Estelle Sys, in 2016. The trial takes place in the Flemish city of Ghent and following a media frenzy, the Belgian media named it “The Millennium Trial”.

The television series, The Twelve, or De Twaalf, was commission by the Belgian channel, Eén, and produced by Eyeworks Film and TV, it was premiered in Belgium by Eén on November 3, 2019. Netflix picked up the series and premiered it on July 10, 2020. The TV show, The Twelve, consists of 10 episodes, each with a running time of around 50 minutes.
