The Empress, Die Kaiserin in German, is a period drama romance that is streaming on Netflix. The show has proved to be extremely popular, taking the number two spot on the Netflix streaming charts almost immediately.
What is the premise of the television show, The Empress?
The television show, The Empress, is actually based upon a true story and it follows the tale of an unlikely romance between first cousins Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, the beautiful daughter of a Bavarian Duke, and Franz, the Emperor of Austria. Twenty three year old Franz was originally meant to propose marriage to Elisabeth’s sister, Helene, but when he met fifteen year old Elisabeth he became infatuated with her and insisted that if he could not marry her then he would not marry at all. Elisabeth, whose nickname was Sisi, and Franz became engaged within days and were married eight months later, when Elisabeth was sixteen years old, poor Helene was said to have fallen into a depression after being rejected. Following their marriage, Sisi became the Empress consort of Austria and Queen of Hungary, she was known to be a free spirit and she found the Viennese court too formal and restrictive, however, the marriage endured and produced four children, three daughters and a son. The TV show depicts the relationship between Sisi and the other members of the royal family, her mother in law, the Archduchess Sophia (who was also her aunt), was displeased with her son’s choice of a wife and was antagonistic towards Sisi. The Empress stars Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant.
When did the show, The Empress, premiere?
Netflix announced that it was commencing production of the historical drama television show, The Empress, in December 2020 and it premiered on September 29, 2022. Netflix describes the show as a romantic television drama, a political TV program and a period piece that is swoonworthy, emotional and romantic, they also refer to the show as a “truthful interpretation” of the real life story of Elisabeth and Franz. The show consists of six episodes, each with a running time of between 51 and 62 minutes. The Empress was created by Katharina Eyssen and Lena Stahl and the executive producers are Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubach, the show was filmed on location in Germany and it is streamed in the German language, although viewers can opt for subtitle options or dubbed versions.
