Manifest follows some of the 191 passengers of Montego Air Flight 828, who discover upon landing in New York City in 2013 that five and a half years have passed since their flight departed from Jamaica and everyone on board was presumed dead.
The series was created by Jeff Rake and premiered on September 24th 2018 on NBC, Rake believed that the series would run for six seasons but in June 2021 NBC revealed that they had canceled Manifest and there would not be a fourth season.
The supernatural drama stars Josh Dallas as Ben Stone and Melissa Roxburgh as his sister Michaela Stone, other cast members include Athena Karkanis as Grace Stone - Ben’s wife and J R Ramirez who plays the role of Detective Jared Vasquez.
As the show progressed, viewers learned more about the strange, supernatural events that followed the reappearance of Montego Air Flight 828, passengers experienced callings, visions and health changes that could not be explained. Despite the drama being only half way through the intended six seasons and season three ending on a cliff hanger, NBC announced that the series was canceled and there would be no fourth season, leaving fans frustrated at the many unanswered questions.
Ratings are generally why TV shows are canceled, although Manifest debuted with decent enough ratings, they declined steadily each year. Production costs could also have been a factor, shows that are expensive to produce but have poor ratings often do not merit renewal. Covid has also affected the industry badly, with lockdowns and Covid-safe requirements stopping or slowing the production of TV shows.
With the sudden and premature finale of the show at the end of season three, fans were left devastated by the total lack of closure and unfulfilled story lines, Jeff Rake shared his feelings on Twitter "My dear Manifesters," he tweeted "I'm devastated by NBC’s decision to cancel us. That we've been shut down in the middle is a gut punch, to say the least. Hoping to find a new home. You the fans deserve an ending to your story. Thanks for the love shown to me, cast, and crew. #SaveManifest."
Before the end of season three, seasons one and two were added to Netflix where they were hugely popular, going straight to the number one position of US Netflix. This gave hope to fans that the streaming service would save the show as it did with You and Lucifer, but Netflix declined to renew the series. Stars of the show took to social media to express their feelings, with Josh Dallas tweeting “Well, my #manifesters, I’m sorry to say that it’s the end of the line for now. We are so proud to have brought you this story over three seasons. We so wished we could’ve finished the journey with you. But it wasn’t in the cards.”
Two months after Manifest debuted on the streaming platform, and after the show had broken its streaming rating records, Netflix suddenly announced that Manifest had been renewed for a fourth and final season. This delighted cast members and fans with creator Jeff Rake saying in an interview with Entertainment Weekly "There is something very meta about the show's death and rebirth, given that that's the story of the series itself".
The final season of Manifest will consist of 20 episodes, which is almost double the usual amount, with most cast members expected to return.
