The enormously popular Apple TV+ drama entered its third and final season on November 5th, but why is it ending, has it been canceled after only three seasons?
The highly original, Peabody winning drama series is set in the 1850’s and it stars Hailee Steinfeld in the role of the legendary American poet, Emily Dickinson. The series was amongst the very first shows to be aired when the Apple TV+ platform went live and it tells the story of the rebellious female poet, with the third and final season of the show culminating during the Civil War.
It seems that Dickinson was not canceled, although the award winning drama is coming to an end, this is because the show was always intended to be run over three seasons only, quite simply, there was never going to be a fourth.
The creator of Dickinson is Alena Smith and her vision of the show was that it would have a three season run with the third season having ten episodes. "When I set out to make ‘Dickinson,’ I envisioned the show as a three-season journey that would tell the origin story of America’s greatest female poet in a whole new way, highlighting Emily’s relevance and resonance to our society today,” stated Alena Smith recently, "In my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined how rich and satisfying the experience of making this show would become and the incredible joy it has been to tell Emily’s story along with Hailee [Steinfeld] and our brilliant, passionate cast and crew. I can’t wait to share our epic final season with the world and to bring our audience along with us to the conclusion of Emily’s coming-of-age saga as she continues to fight for her own poetic truth, while reckoning with so many of the issues that face us now." She continued "Thank you to Hailee Steinfeld and our entire ‘Dickinson’ team for making this such an unforgettable creative journey. I’m grateful for my partnership with Apple and can’t wait to continue telling more original stories with them in the years ahead.”
The official synopsis states that Emily’s “most productive time as an artist falls amid the raging American Civil War and an equally fierce battle that divides her own family,” it adds that “as Emily tries to heal the divides around her, she wonders if art can help keep hope alive, and whether the future can be better than the past.” With the third season ending during the Civil War as Alena Smith had envisioned, she stated in an interview ahead of season two “We do get to that in season three,” adding “I’m thinking if that was the final season, I’d be able to walk away proudly from it.”
Alena Smith signed an overall multi-year deal with Apple TV+ in 2020 and has many other projects lined up for the company.
