If you’re a Netflix user, chances are that you’ve seen or heard of Monarca somewhere – and it’s easy to see why. The series, created by Diego Gutierrez (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, From Dusk Till Dawn), charts the trials and tribulations of a millionaire tequila mogul and his family, as they find their empire in danger of collapsing under a world of scandal, corruption, secrets and violence. Here’s everything you need to know about Season One and Season Two, which premiered on Netflix on New Year’s Day. Beware, there’s Monarca spoilers ahead! Monarca Season 3 release date available here first! Season One At the beginning of Season One, we are introduced to Ana María Dávila (Irene Azuela). Our story begins in Los Angeles, where Ana has lived with her husband and family for twenty years since leaving her original home in Mexico. During a phone call from her father, the owner and operator of the successful Monarca tequila brand, she is asked to return home to Mexico in order to help her father run his various businesses, which also includes multiple hotels and construction businesses. We begin to discover exactly what it was that led Ana to leave Mexico in the first place, where she now must travel back to in order to help her father. Her father has been reflecting on years of corruption, drug involvement, business crime and huge secrets that could send his whole life unravelling – and now he wants to put a stop to it. Ana’s father feels it is high time that he changed his ways and took a more straight and narrow path throughout his later years… though we quickly find that he will never get the chance, as he is violently shot and killed. With her father gone and the businesses left with no clear leader, Ana must enter into a fight with her brothers in order to gain control of the Carranza family’s vast fortunes and empire – a decision which, thanks to the wishes of her late father, ultimately lies with Cecilia, the mother of the three. Ana’s brothers have their own huge secrets, too. Youngest brother Andrés is the man in charge of the hotel side of the family empire – a position which has allowed him the opportunity to begin a relationship with a male sculptor, with the full knowledge of his wife and mother of his son. The most corrupt of the three siblings, however, is older brother Joaquin. Joaquin handles the construction side of the family empire, but makes it clear from the start that he thinks he should be the one to take over the family business as a whole now that their father is no longer around. To the shock and anger of the Carranza men, Cecilia names Ana the new CEO of the family’s dealings – setting up a series of dangerous and diabolical events within the family. Despite her new position at the top of the Carranza empire, Ana is not satisfied – she won’t rest until she finds out who was behind her father’s untimely and upsetting end. This task is anything but easy, with Ana having to face betrayal, blackmail, threats and even further tragedies along the way, though this does not deter her in her mission. Ana’s life is turned upside down by the truly shocking events going on around her, as she discovers just how near-impossible it is to attempt to hold down an honest and above board business (as her father wished for Monarca and the rest of his empire to become) in a world which is powered by greed, scandal and corruption. At the close of Season One, we are witness to an incredible cliffhanger, with fans left waiting eagerly to find out what will happen next to the Carranza family and their business empire – a question which was answered when Monarca returned on January 1st, 2021. Season Two Remember, there are spoilers for Season Two ahead! Following on from the dramatic scenes in which Cecilia brutally murdered the family’s Uncle Fausto by pumping him with lead, his daughter Sofia Carranza arrives on the scene with motives reminiscent of the ones held by Ana throughout Season One – not only does Sofia desperately want to know who killed her father, but she wants to take over the family business, too. Despite Cecilia’s apparent guilt over the murder, nobody is willing to speak – or risk losing control of their empire to Sofia, who currently owns 10% of the shares in Monarca tequila. Meanwhile, Ana has begun working with the candidate of an important national election, but her efforts are put in jeopardy by a scandal. There’s also problems closer to home when Ana discovers that her husband has started the process of writing a book which details a gruesome murder that Ana saw her father commit when she was a young girl – a book which Ana hopes will never see the light of day. Overall, Season Two is just as action packed with twists and turns as Season One, featuring more murder, intrigue, mystery and scandal than you would think possible in just one television series. If you’re yet to watch it for yourself, queue it, grab some popcorn and a drink and prepare for a wild ride! Season 3 Stay tuned to find out when Season 3 will be released.
